oklahoma ag asks supreme court to overturn tribal ruling on criminal jurisdictionOklahoma Attorney General John O’Connor has petitioned the Supreme Court to overturn—or at least narrow the scope of—a landmark 2020 ruling on tribal sovereignty that he said was inadvertently leading to a “criminal-justice crisis” and putting the public in danger.

O’Connor, a Republican, said in a Friday filing that that the Supreme Court’s 5–4 ruling in McGirt v. Oklahoma, which held that the state does not have jurisdiction to prosecute major crimes committed by Native Americans in a large portion of eastern Oklahoma, has led to outcomes that are “calamitous and worsening by the day” for Oklahomans.

senate advances to wrap up 1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure billThe Senate agreed to wrap up the $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill through a test vote.

In the 67–27 vote, 18 Republicans joined with Democrats to support moving forward on the legislation, clearing a key procedural hurdle.

More votes, mostly on amendments, are needed before the Senate can pass the bill.

It’s unclear when the final vote will happen.

The Senate Democrats need 10 Republican votes to pass the measure, which is one of the top priorities on President Joe Biden’s agenda.

over 800 unaccompanied children crossing border illegally apprehended in one dayBorder agents on Wednesday took into custody 834 unaccompanied children illegally crossing the southern border, marking the highest daily total recorded since the Biden administration started releasing such data in March.

The data, which was first reported by the Washington Examiner, came on the heels of preliminary Department of Homeland Security (DHS) figures indicating July border crossings by unaccompanied minors would hit an all-time high.

Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have been critical of the Biden administration for setting policies that they say are fueling the border surge.

california republican party wont endorse candidate in recall electionThe California Republican Party (CAGOP) has officially declined to endorse any candidate in the upcoming gubernatorial recall election in September.

Four candidates had qualified to be considered for endorsement: conservative radio and EpochTV host Larry Elder, who is leading in the polls, state Assemblyman Kevin Kiley, former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, and former congressman Doug Ose.

Party delegates voted 671 to 77 at a virtual meeting on Aug. 7 on a motion to table the endorsement vote. A simple majority was needed to pass the motion.
