Julio M. Shiling is a political scientist, author, lecturer, columnist, media commentator, and director of Patria de Martí and The CubanAmerican Voice. He holds a master’s degree in political science from Florida International University (FIU) in Miami, Florida. He is a member of The American Political Science Association The PEN Club (Cuban Writers in Exile Chapter) and the Academy of Cuban History in Exile.

He is the author of fourteen books, including the much-acclaimed Dictatorships and Their Paradigms: Why Do Some Dictatorships Fall While Others Do Not? (2013, 2022), formerly a two-volume work and now formatted into one book. Being fluent in Spanish has allowed him to publish his works in that language as well. His articles and essays have been reproduced in dozens of print and electronic publications in the U.S., Latin America, and Europe. Among them are Cuba Net, Cuba Encuentro, Martí Noticias, PanAm Post, El American, ADN America, Latin America Advisor and The Washington Examiner.

Since 2006, Julio M. Shiling has been directing Patria de Martí, a digital platform that brings together the work of numerous authors, selected for their contribution to the promotion and preservation of freedom and democracy. Patria de Martí was awarded the 2015 Human Rights Freedom Prize by the Association for Continental Peace (ASOPAZCO), a Spanish NGO dedicated to promoting human rights in the world. Additionally, in 2015, he obtained the Cuban Flag recognition in Boston, Massachusetts, on the occasion of the Grito de Yara celebration. In 2017, he received the Herencia Award from Cuban Cultural Heritage, for his contribution to Cuban culture.

As a political scientist and media commentator, he is a frequent guest on local, national, and international television, radio, podcast, and other media platform programs which include WLRN (PBS), NTN24, América Te Vé, CNN, Univisión, Telemundo, France24, Azteca TV, La Poderosa WWFE, Radio Martí, Televisión Martí, News Radio, Mega TV, Voz de América, Radio Caracol, GMT Radio, KYS FM, Radio Nacional Argentina, Todo Noticias, MDZ Radio, RCN Radio, TV Caracol Internacional, TV CB24, Radio Libre, Radio América, Actualidad Radio, Radio Mambí, El Venezolano TV, Mundo Max, Mira TV, Direct TV News,  Democracia TV, TV Venezuela, Radio República, Radio 94.9 FM, Radio Caracas, Americano Media. Additionally, he has founded and directed insurance and financial services companies.

As a lecturer, he regularly participates in forums, conferences, panel discussions and other public speaking events. Patria de Martí co-hosts “Symposiums for a Free World”, a series of conferences designed to promote greater civic awareness with a commitment to elevating consciousness about freedom and democracy. These Symposiums are held monthly, each with a different theme and diverse panelists. They are offered as a public service where admission is always free and open to everyone.

Born in Havana, Cuba, he went into exile with his family at the age of six. After a brief stay in Madrid, Spain, they relocated to the United States, settling in Union City and West New York, both cities in the state of New Jersey. A few years later, they moved to Miami, Florida, where he currently resides.
