Churches can now endorse a candidate

Churches can now endorse a candidate. FEC says churches can endorse candidates – but it's still risky

Less than seven weeks before the 2020 presidential elections, the head of the Federal Election Commission is reminding people that it's okay for churches and other religious organizations to endorse candidates.

On Saturday, FEC chair Trey Trainor appeared on a Church Militant podcast, reminding viewers that the "Johnson Amendment," which forbids religious organizations from engaging in political activity, was rescinded by President Donald Trump his first week in office.

"One of the first things he did when he came into office in 2017 was issue an executive order to the Department of the Treasury, telling them that they could no longer enforce that provision of the law and that religious organizations needed to be treated the same as every other organization," Trainor explained.

ROSARIO, Argentina – Against the backdrop of deep tensions between Nicaragua’s bishops and the socialist government of President Daniel Ortega and his wife, Vice President Rosario Murillo, three Catholic churches in the country have been attacked in the last three weeks, building upon a long-standing pattern of churches being targets.

While government officials have described the incidents as isolated and blamed conditions inside churches for any damage caused, Catholic leaders insist the attacks were “premeditated” and part of a campaign of “terrorism” directed by pro-Ortega forces.

Statue of Jesus Found Toppled, Beheaded in Miami, Church Says.

A statue of Jesus Christ was found toppled and beheaded at a Catholic church in Miami, an act of vandalism that probably will be investigated as a hate crime, church officials said.

The attack that occurred sometime between late on July 14 and the morning of July 15 at Miami-Dade’s Good Shepherd Catholic Church was likely targeted, Rev. Edivaldo da Silva said. The statue was decapitated and removed from its pedestal, he said.

“They had some powerful hands to remove it. Seeing what is happening in our country, I presume so, but we don’t have 100 percent assurance,” da Silva told local news station WSVN.

The local archdiocese said that police will likely investigate the statue desecration as a hate crime.

Disturbing Attack On Catholic Statue

Republican Tennessee Congressman Chuck Fleischmann addressed the beheading of a Virgin Mary statue in Chattanooga as being “among a series” of attacks on Catholic Churches that have taken place across the country.

The statue was reportedly found knocked over and beheaded at St. Stephen Catholic Church on July 11, the third incident of a vandalized Virgin Mary in the same week. Rep. Fleischmann told the Daily Caller that he’s praying for the perpetrators of the attack, and hopes justice is served.

“During these difficult times as a nation it is imperative that we come together. It is heartbreaking to see so many incidents of hate directed at religion and the church in recent days,” he told the Caller.
