‘Woke Activism’ Could Take Over Hispanic Radio Stations: Interview with Orlando Gutierrez.
Stations that have played as a “hub of community awareness” and as a “public space for the Cuban exile community” could now be at risk.
AUTHOR JULIO M. SHILING Y TOMÁS LUGO
As part of El American series of short interviews, our contributor Julio M. Shiling interviewed journalist Orlando Gutiérrez-Boronat, secretary-general of the Cuban Democratic Directorate, to discuss the recent purchase of 18 Hispanic radio stations by a group of Democrats financed by George Soros, including the iconic Radio Mambí, known for its anti-communist views.
Gutiérrez-Boronat said he was concerned that the role these stations have played as a “hub of community awareness” and as a “public space for the Cuban exile community” could now be at risk.

Colombia now has a communist president. Petro was among the first Marxist insurgents to heed Castro’s call.
The history of Marxist subversion in the Western Hemisphere began as early as 1919. The Bolshevik coup d’État in Russia signified the beginning of a global communist war for political power. Despite successes of the Communist International (Comintern) and Soviet intelligence in destabilizing democratic regimes across the Americas — including penetrating institutions as important as that of various American presidential administrations — victories in the Western Hemisphere were scarce for the most part. The Castro-Communist revolution bolstered socialist expansionism in an unprecedented way after 1959. Ironically, it wasn’t until the fall of Soviet communism — thirty-two years later — that socialist despotism began to really blossom in Latin America.

As part of El American’s series of short interviews, our contributor Julio M. Shiling spoke with Alfredo Ortega Rubio, who is currently running for a seat on the Weston City Council in Florida. If successful, Ortega Rubio would be the only Hispanic on the local institution.
Our interviewee worked for more than six years as chief of staff for the two mayors of the City of Doral, but always as a resident of Weston, a city where half of the population is of Hispanic origin, so he considers that being Venezuelan is an “added value” for his candidacy.

The overarching dilemma here is how can a free republic expose itself to annihilation by allowing an antisystem candidate like Petro to compete for power?.
When we refer to an area such as the Americas, does geography or a set of values have primacy? An argument can be made for both. Systems of government, however, have increasingly become the primary measure in classifying what binds nations, rather than where they are located on the map. The Americas, as judged by regional accords and practicing doctrines, aligned itself in the modern era with the second factor. The Western Hemisphere made it known, following World War I, that democracy and free societies would be the accepted norm of governance and societal arrangement.
Europe made this clear when World War II concluded, and the Cold War began. East and West became, not geographic boundaries, but determinants of freedom and totalitarian socialism. Suddenly, being part of the West included countries in the East such as Japan, South Korea, Australia, Taiwan, just to name a few. Western civilization, that fusion of Jerusalem, Athens, and Rome, incorporated non-Christian nations. Values became the guiding rule.
