Evocation of Cuban hero José Martí in María Corina Machado's Venezuela

Millions of visitors have seen José Martí, his chest offered to bullets, the rider of a horse with front legs raised, a symbol of death, the last equestrian figure sculpted by Anna Hyatt Huntington, a Cuban gift to the people of the United States of America, planted on the south side of New York's Central Park.

Passing in front of the imposing sculpture, the visitor can read the following inscription, inlaid on black granite:

"Jose Marti, the apostle of Cuban independence/ leader of the peoples of America and defender of human dignity. His literacy genius vied with his political foresight. He was born in Havana on January 28, 1853. For fifteen years of his exile, he lived in the city of New York. He died in action at Dos Rios in Oriente province on May 19, 1895.

The only episode of violence due to his will, imposed by the manners of the 19th century, was so strange to the conduct of a poet, that Rubén Darío, upon learning of the sacrifice, exclaimed: "Master, what have you done!

The phrase, from poet to poet, had its antecedents in the trajectory of the Cuban bard, founder together with his Nicaraguan emulator of Modernism. A year after Martí disembarked in Manhattan, on January 10, 1881, the New York Illustrated Magazine published his essay Nuestra América (Our América), where he anticipated María Corina Machado's epic by writing:

Overview of the Attack

On July 8, Russia launched a devastating wave of missile strikes across Ukraine, resulting in at least 31 deaths and 154 injuries, according to Ukrainian officials. The attack targeted multiple cities, causing widespread destruction and civilian casualties.

WE MUST OPPOSE THE ADVANCES OF THE AXIS OF EVIL IN THE WORLD

Miami, Florida—April 16, 2024—Assembly of the Cuban Resistance—We must not leave the Ukrainian people alone in their fight against the Russian invasion. An invasion that the totalitarian Cuban regime, through the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), has supported by sending young Cubans as mercenaries. The Cuban dictatorship cooperates with Russia, Iran, and China in this conspiracy against the free world.

The axis of evil’s penetration in our hemisphere is growing, as proved by the recent case of the former US diplomat Victor Manuel Rocha, who was convicted of spying for decades on behalf of the communist regime in Cuba against the United States’ security.

The members of the ACR recently alerted American legislators to the national and international security threats that will arise from abandoning an ally, since totalitarian and autocratic regimes, even in our region, “would stiffen their resolve” to redraw borders and undermine democracy.

In the letter, the ACR also reminds Congress that the United States, as signatory of the Budapest Memorandum that denuclearized Ukraine, has the moral obligation to guarantee the integrity of its territory as promised in 1994.

As members of the Assembly of the Cuban Resistance, who are committed to the struggle for freedom in Cuba and opposing the advances of communism in the world, we believe that we must remain vigilant of what is happening in this momentous period where we are confronted by all these aggressions of the axis of evil. Therefore, we must show solidarity with our Ukrainian brothers and sisters, and not leave them alone in their fight to defend their sovereignty.

The Assembly of the Cuban Resistance (ACR) raises its voice against the axis of evil’s violations of freedom, sovereignty, and world peace, including Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, Iran’s attack against Israel, and the inroads that communist China has made into the free world.
