This time the awarded film director has focused on the daily struggles by ordinary folks for basic needs in Cuba and the system of entrenched corruption it engenders. This all too familiar scenario within all communist countries, is vividly showcased in this movie.
El American could not pass up the opportunity to talk with Lilo Vilaplana about this latest silver screen jewel, “El caballo” (The Horse). Seeking to portray the challenges of meeting daily life necessities amid the scarcity in socialist systems, it places the viewer in those intricacies.

Continuing along the track of letting the audience grasp the realities of life in closed societies, “El Caballo” follows the path of films such as “The Lives of Others” (2006). The German award-winning movie shines light on the police state mechanics of East Germany, Vilaplana seeks to open the window to the lives of Cubans in the struggle to survive.
Vilaplana argued for the need to make films that serve to raise consciousness about life under socialism. Confronting a whole set of hurdles, “El Caballo” was completed, in great part, due to the tenacity of its director, and the crew that worked tirelessly in front and behind the camaras to make this possible.
The opening on Saturday September 25t, at the emblematic Artime Theater in Miami, has been sold out. However, it can be rented movie and viewed anywhere. The adversities that an anticommunist film director faces, such as leftist Hollywood and woke platforms like Netflix, were amply discussed in the interview.
